Paragliding in Interlaken: six flights between two lakes

Interlaken means between the lakes, and that is the geography exactly. The town sits on the flat alluvial strip separating Thun from Brienz, with the massif rising to the south. Fly from here and the ground below you is water, town and open hillside.

Not the walls. The valley with the vertical sides and the line of falls is 20 km south up a spur, and none of these six listings go there. The description is the plainest of the four: paraglide to lofty heights, admire the mountains and the lakes, discover the town from above, flown with a skilled and experienced pilot. If you want the line that the largest number of people have already taken, this is it, and it is not the highest fare of the four either.

$223 — the same length, a dollar more. 976 reviews at 4.9, also 90 minutes. Its description works harder on the view: flying like a bird in the Jungfrau region, emerald lakes below, verdant hillsides around, and the awe-inspiring Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau behind. On numbers there is nothing to separate it from the line above except a third of the reviews.

$234 — the one that names its numbers. 655 reviews at 5.0, 90 minutes, and the only description anywhere in this niche that tells you what you get: glide roughly 800 metres above the Jungfrau region and soar in the air for 10 to 20 minutes. Everything else on this site prints a booking length and leaves the air time to your imagination. That single sentence is why this is the line we would book first.

$259 — the highest launch, the shortest booking. 60 minutes at 4.7 across 73 reviews, and the highest fare of the four. Its description calls it the highest tandem flight in the town and puts turquoise lakes and the Swiss Alps under a certified professional pilot. It costs $37 more than the most booked line for half an hour less booking, so the launch height had better be the reason you are buying it.

How to read the ratings. 4.9 across 2,580 is a stronger signal than 5.0 across 73, and 5.0 across 655 is stronger than both. Where the sample is small the rating tells you little, and the two-review listing at the bottom of this niche tells you nothing at all.

Two of the six listings are not really flights at all. They are days, sold from cities four and five hours away, with a tandem flight placed inside them.

$394 — ten hours. 4.7 across 83 reviews. The description is a journey through the Alps at the foot of the Jungfrau, culminating at 3,454 metres, with a paragliding flight over the Alps as the centrepiece. As a way to see the massif in a single day from Zurich it is coherent. As a way to buy a flight it costs $172 more than $222.

$460 — thirteen hours. 5.0, across two reviews. The description promises the Jungfrau and the Schilthorn seen from above and Interlaken and its lakes explored on the ground. It is the highest fare on the site and the longest day, and two reviews is not evidence, it is an absence of it. We would rather say that than round it up into a recommendation.

Who these are for. Somebody whose hotel is already paid for in Zurich or Geneva, who has one spare day and does not want to move luggage. For that person the arithmetic works. For anybody sleeping in the Oberland, the same flight costs less than half as much and returns eight hours to the day.

What the long days share with the short ones. Free cancellation, and the same dependence on the air. A ten-hour coach day does not make the wind more agreeable; it only makes a cancelled flight a more expensive disappointment.
